The improved Mage Hand at Level 1 is a strict upgrade over the default Mage Hand, and it saves a level 1 spell slot. At Level 5, Githyanki gain Misty Step, a normally level 3 spell that can be incredibly valuable for this Spell Slot-starved class.
Soldier (Athletics, Intimidation): Trained in various battlefield strategies, the Soldier is both brave and smart in the heat of battle. Their Athletics Proficiency allows them to perform incredible feats of strength, while Intimidation allows them to scare people into submission.
Additionally, both classes rely on Charisma, and can both take advantage of a player's high CHA stat without forcing them to invest in others. Three levels in Sorcerer lets players choose a Sorcerer subclass.
Each of Baldur's Gate 3 's classes offers different abilities and utilities to the team, from the Rogue's incredible burst damage and trap-removing abilities, to the Fighter's access to every weapon and armor type, or the Druid's ability to shapeshift and speak with any animal they meet.
In Act 1 , which typically brings players up to around Level 5 , you will be able to choose your Warlock Subclass (Great Old One), pick up your first set of three Cantrips (don't forget Eldritch Blast), learn a few basic Warlock spells, and pick up your first two Eldritch Invocations.
The Illusion school is sadly lacking when compared to many of the other Wizard Subclasses in the game, but does have a ton of utility for stealth. As such, taking Rogue levels can be very beneficial when playing an Illusionist. If going down this path, players could use equipment that lowers the target number for a critical hit (the Covert Cowl , for example) to complement their stealthy approach to exploration and combat.
Lightning Damage is the way to go with Conjuration Wizardry even when not multiclassing, since wet opponents will receive double damage from lightning. Cold damage can also be quite effective with the right gear, like the Winter's Clutches Gloves (Act 1, Sold by Lady Esther on the Rosymorne Monastery Trail or given by Sovereign Glut for completing the quest "Avenge Glut's Circle") and Hoarfrost Boots (Act 1, found in the Inquisitor's Chambers at the Githyanki Creche.)
At Level 1, The Great Old One gives Warlocks access to Tasha's Hideous Laughter or Dissonant Whispers , and then at Level 3, they can use Detect Thoughts and Phantasmal Force. Playing as a Great Old One Warlock means committing nearly entirely to being a spellcaster, so only engage in combat from a distance.
Level 7 allows access to "Dominate Beast" and "Greater Invisibility," enabling them to turn animals to their side and render a target invisible for ten rounds whether they attack or not. Level 9 grants them access to "Dominate Person" and "Seeming," letting them manipulate humanoids and disguise all four party members simultaneously. Finally, at level 10, an Archfey Warlock gains "Beguiling Defenses", becoming immune to charm.
Because of their enormous repertoire of knowledge, and the ability to swap prepared spells from their entire available list of spells anytime outside of combat, Wizards are generally considered the class with the most diversity and utility in Baldur's Gate 3 .
Warlocks have something to do every time they level up, but limited spell slots makes it important to make the right selections. This table displays recommended BG3 Warlock build choices for every level that synergize well with the Bg3 Tournament Great Old One Warlock build, including a number of powerful CC and debuffing offensive spells, Eldritch Invocations that empower you or grant new abilities, and Feats that will help your effectiveness as a ranged spellcaster.
At Level 9, the Oath of the Ancients allows access to "Protection From Energy" and "Plant Growth" as additional prepared spells, letting them grant resistance to an elemental damage type or create difficult terrain for their foes.
The Staff of Interruption (which can be acquired in Act 3 if Mayrina is still alive) is also useful, providing a free level 5 counterspell every long rest. The Robe of Supreme Defenses (purchased during Act 3 near the Requisitioned Barn in Rivington) will provide a +1 boost to AC while concentrating on a spell, so it's worth looking for this too. If you took levels in Fighter, you should consider Viconia's Walking Fortress as a powerful shield that can reflect spells back onto their casters once per long rest. It can be looted from Viconia DeVir during Shadowheart's Companion quest. You can also make use of the Helldusk Armor acquired from the House of Hope to really amp up your defenses and punish anyone who tries to use spells on you.
Wizards get to choose two skills from a list of six at character creation, including Arcana, History, Investigation, Insight, Medicine, and Religion. Choosing the Sage background removes History and Arcana from the pool of other skill proficiencies Wizards can learn at Level 1, leaving four choices remaining, while Guild Artisans just lose Insight.
