By choosing the Sage background, a Knowledge Cleric can start the game with 4/5 intelligence skill proficiencies. It might not seem like a natural fit, but dipping two levels into the Fighter class as a Cleric grants an incredibly powerful ability: Action Surge. One of the iconic abilities of the Fighter class, Action Surge is a Bonus Action that grants the caster another Action that turn.

At level six, Illusion Wizards can "See Invisibility" as an action. This allows them to see invisible foes and has a decent chance of revealing them to allies, too (unless they succeed the Dexterity Saving Throw). Level 10 Illusion Wizards get "Illusory Self," allowing them to create an Illusory Double as a reaction to take a hit for them. This causes the incoming attack to automatically miss, and the double is instantly destroyed. This can only be used once per short rest.

"Dread Ambusher: Hide" simply allows them to hide as a bonus action. "Umbral Shroud" allows them to become invisible as an action as long as they are obscured. "Superior Darkvision" allows the Gloom Stalker to see up to 24m in darkness without issue. They also automatically learn "Disguise Self" as a first level spell.

At level five, they learn "Misty Step" as a second level spell, allowing them to teleport as a bonus action for better maneuverability. Level seven grants them "Iron Mind," giving them proficiency in intelligence and wisdom saving throws. Level nine allows them to access "Fear" as a third level spell, helping them to render foes vulnerable to attack and prevent them from moving.
